PPI – Programme of Integral Psychostimulation

The PPI evaluates the beneficial effects of cognitive stimulation in people with mild dementia. To date, more than 1,800 individuals have participated in the program.

The Program of Integral Psychostimulation (PPI) is Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona’s longest-running project, launched in 1991. Its objective is to evaluate the beneficial effects of cognitive stimulation in people with mild dementia, as well as to improve and/or slow the clinical progression of the disease in the short and medium term.

The PPI is a program designed for people with cognitive impairment that includes the stimulation of basic cognitive functions, the practice of instrumental skills, the exercise of psychomotor abilities, and the promotion of activities of daily living. Its purpose is to ease daily life and coexistence with a person living with dementia.

The program integrates different techniques aimed at improving behavioral and personality-related aspects. The application of rehabilitation techniques focuses primarily on four areas in people with dementia: cognitive, motor, psychosocial, and activities of daily living. For this reason, it is considered a comprehensive intervention approach.

The therapeutic strategy of the PPI is based on the concept of neuronal plasticity and draws upon cognitive neuropsychology, behavior modification therapy, and the individual’s biopsychosocial condition. To date, more than 1,800 people have participated in the Program of Integral Psychostimulation at Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona
