Genes4All: project to improve the genetic understanding of Alzheimer’s disease
At Ace, we are part of Genes4All, an innovative European project designed to raise awareness of genetic counselling services in the context of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Funded by the Erasmus+ programme, the project brings together institutions including the Danish Committee for Health Education (Denmark), Dokuz Eylul University (Turkey), Alzheimer Hellas (Greece), Heidelberg University Hospital (Germany) and Challedu (Greece). Genes4All aims to democratise access to relevant genetic information for families and patients who are considering genetic counselling services or wish to learn more about them, using an educational and accessible approach.
Main objectives of Genes4All
Genes4All focuses on addressing the potential lack of awareness among people affected by neurodegenerative diseases and their families regarding genetic counselling. The project also seeks to overcome the educational and access barriers that many individuals face when dealing with complex genetic information. Through educational games and training resources, the project aims to present users with the full process of genetic counselling sessions, reducing potential anxiety caused by unfamiliarity with the service and highlighting its possibilities.
Key components of the project
Genes4All aims to develop a serious game to bring the experience of genetic counselling closer to patients with neurodegenerative diseases. To this end, the project is structured around the following key tools:
-
Genes4All educational game: an interactive educational video game that immerses users in an experience similar to genetic counselling. It uses accessible narratives to explain concepts such as inheritance, genetic risk and predisposition, which are highly relevant during counselling sessions.
-
Digital guide for genetic counselling: a document presenting a structured model that can help professionals improve the accessibility and effectiveness of their services. This resource is essential for reducing barriers to genetic knowledge and facilitating its implementation.
-
Educational platform: a collective learning tool that will provide access to all materials generated by the project, along with additional general recommendations that may be relevant to users, with the aim of fostering informed decision-making among the target audience.
Impact of Genes4All
Genes4All seeks to empower individuals by raising awareness of the tools available to help them better understand the role of genetics in their health, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. The project aims to promote informed decision-making and reduce educational barriers from a global and accessible perspective. Through our participation, Ace reinforces its commitment to innovation and health education, consolidating its role as a leading reference in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia research.
