Parlem d’art: art as a tool for the wellbeing of people with Alzheimer’s

Art as a strategy to improve quality of life and create moments of connection and memory for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

At Ace Alzheimer Centre Barcelona, we know that art can do much more than decorate a wall: it can awaken memories, stir emotions, and connect people. In fact, for years, through projects such as  Estimul’Art, we have shown how a painting, a sculpture, or even a color can open doors to memory and create moments of shared joy.

Parlem d’Art was born from this experience, creating spaces where people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families can feel, talk, and enjoy together, rediscovering life through art. Far from being just a cultural activity, Parlem d’Art is a therapeutic stimulation strategy. Each session is designed to activate memory, encourage reminiscence, and improve emotional well-being, offering people with Alzheimer’s opportunities to connect with their memories and emotions through art.

Parlem d’Art

The Parlem d’Art project is carried out through what are known as dialogue capsules. These are participatory sessions in which attendees observe and discuss different works of art based on a common theme. Through open-ended questions and shared perspectives, participants are encouraged to express their thoughts, listen to others, and build a collective conversation around the images.

The artistic journey revolves around the celebration of life at all its stages, from childhood to youth and adulthood. The selected artworks aim to evoke memories and emotions—both personal and shared—creating a welcoming space where people feel free to speak, remember, and enjoy together.

Research and Quality of Life: The Role of Ace

Parlem d’Art is an example of the work carried out by Ace Alzheimer Centre Barcelona, which combines research with innovative projects, all with the aim of improving the lives of people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families. Initiatives like this demonstrate how contact with culture and art can enhance mood, encourage communication, and keep the mind active, while also providing moments of genuine enjoyment for patients.

Moreover, these experiences teach us how to use art and culture as tools to deliver better care for people with Alzheimer’s disease. The activities offered are creative, humane, and centered on participants’ needs, reinforcing Ace’s commitment to accompanying each person in a close and respectful way.

A Collaborative and Accessible Project

The sessions are led by professionals who combine cultural expertise with accessibility, ensuring that all participants feel included and respected. At the same time, the museum becomes a meeting place where art acts as a bridge to remember, feel emotions, and connect with others.

In conclusion, through projects such as Parlem d’Art, Ace Alzheimer Centre Barcelona continues to create initiatives that combine research, innovation, and humanity, offering new opportunities to enjoy, participate, and improve the quality of life of people with Alzheimer’s disease and their families—today and always.
