Information Pill: resources and benefits for dementia caregivers

With the aim of creating a space dedicated to providing training and support for families caring for people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias, Ace organizes online information pills during the year, a series of free online sessions given by the Caregivers' Classroom.

In our latest pill, entitled “Map of supports: resources and benefits for caregivers,” we help caregivers better understand the available resources and financial benefits they can access.

Navigating the system of supports and services can often be complex due to terminology and administrative processes. Therefore, in this session we address some of these key issues, such as:

• Economic and assistance benefits: we explain different types of assistance such as the Economic Benefit for Care in the Family Environment and the assistance resources available.
• Support services: we detail options such as day centers and home care to facilitate the daily life of caregivers and people with dementia.
• Differences between dependency and disability: we clarify both concepts and their implications in the access to aid.
• Steps to apply for resources: we provide practical information on procedures and necessary documentation.

From Ace, we understand that information, anticipation and support are key tools to sustain the care process and preserve the balance of all parties involved. In addition to offering a technical description of the available resources, we dedicate a space to reflect on how to present these resources to the person with dementia, especially when he/she is not aware of his/her deficits and shows resistance to use them, addressing communication and support strategies that favor the acceptance of aids and support.
