“I’ve been more forgetful lately.”
It’s a phrase we hear often. Sometimes it’s the person themselves who notices it. Other times, it’s a son, daughter, partner, or friend who begins to worry about small changes in someone close to them.
And it’s normal to have questions.
Forgetting where you left your keys or walking into a room and forgetting what you were looking for can be part of everyday life. However, there are times when changes in memory start to feel different, and it can be difficult to know when it’s worth seeking advice.
To help make that first step easier, Barcelona’s pharmacy-based early cognitive impairment screening program is returning with the support of Nutricia.
The initiative offers a free initial memory assessment close to home and guided by healthcare professionals.
What does the memory screening involve?
Participating pharmacies will offer a brief digital memory test that has been clinically validated.
No preparation or medical referral is required. In just a few minutes, participants receive an initial indication of their cognitive health.
It is important to remember that this is not a medical diagnosis. However, it can help identify potential warning signs and determine whether a more comprehensive evaluation may be advisable.
Why can early memory screening be helpful?
Many people notice small changes in memory over time but attribute them to stress, ageing, or simple absent-mindedness.
The challenge is that when concerns arise, people often wait years before seeking professional advice.
Identifying potential changes early can help people better understand what is happening, access specialist assessment sooner if needed, and make informed decisions about their health.
Who may benefit from this assessment?
This free memory screening may be a good option for:
- People who have noticed changes in memory, attention, or language.
- Adults over the age of 50 interested in preventive cognitive health checks.
- Individuals with a family history of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.
- Family members who have observed changes in a loved one and would like guidance.
Where can the screening take place?
One of the main advantages of this initiative is its accessibility. There is no need to visit a hospital or wait for a specialist appointment to take this first step.
During the first days of June, several community pharmacies across Barcelona will offer free memory assessments. Confirmed sessions include:
- June 1, 4:00 PM: Irene Diego Esparcía Pharmacy and Hereus de Joan Boncompte Pharmacy.
- June 2, 4:00 PM: Joan Josep Boncompte Giné Pharmacy and Lucía Fullana Barceló Pharmacy.
- June 3, 4:00 PM: Mare Vives Pharmacy.
Additional participating pharmacies will also take part in the early cognitive impairment screening program throughout the week.
Looking After Your Memory Is Also Prevention
We are used to monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol levels, or blood sugar.
Brain health deserves the same attention.
Initiatives like this make it easier to seek advice when the first questions arise.
Because when it comes to memory, identifying changes early can make a real difference.
