Fact sheet: Hygiene and clothing in dementia
With the aim of offering practical and emotional support to caregiving families, the Ace Caregivers’ Classroom organizes several online information sessions throughout the year. These free sessions are designed to provide useful tools and knowledge for the day-to-day care of people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.
At the session held on September 8, entitled “Hygiene and clothing in dementia: what to do when difficulties arise,” resources and strategies were shared for assisting people with personal care routines. Everyday activities such as showering, dressing, and dental hygiene can become challenging as the disease progresses. Recommendations were therefore offered on how to maintain dignity and autonomy by adapting the environment and routines to each person’s needs.
Some of the points covered in the session:
- Personal hygiene: how to provide support when the person forgets their routines, refuses to do them, or does not know where to start, avoiding conflict and discomfort.
- Clothing and identity: how to help the person choose clothes and maintain their own style, respecting preferences and facilitating autonomy.
- Practical support: strategies to reduce distress and foster an environment of trust during these daily activities.
- Dignity and well-being: the importance of preserving identity and self-esteem despite the difficulties arising from dementia.
In addition, specific strategies were presented to help family members cope with rejection or difficulties that may arise in these daily tasks, providing guidance and training to reduce stress and facilitate a more positive experience for everyone.
