COMFORTage, a European initiative for integrated and personalized care for the prevention of dementia and frailty

The COMFORTage project is a European initiative that aims to develop a model of integrated and personalized care for the prevention of dementia and frailty.

Low birth rates, coupled with longer life expectancy, are transforming the age pyramid on the European continent. This is confirmed by the latest studies by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat), which indicate that fifty percent of the population is now over the age of 44. Faced with this generalized aging, it is important to be prepared to cope as well as possible with age-related pathologies such as dementia and frailty.

The COMFORTage project was born precisely as a result of the growing number of people affected by these pathologies in Europe and aims to promote a significant change in the way they are currently managed.

Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona, along with 38 other entities from 12 European countries, participates in this project led by the University of Piraeus, Greece, which aims to address the challenges related to aging, focusing on developing innovative technological solutions for addressing dementia and frailty. To obtain the necessary funding, the project was submitted as a proposal to the European Union, whose evaluators awarded it the maximum score in excellence, structure and objectives.

Ace Alzheimer Center will focus on one of the planned pilot activities in projects related to dementia prevention. The entity will be responsible, together with other clinical centers in Europe, for implementing, evaluating and validating digital solutions designed to improve the quality of life of people with mild cognitive impairment and dementia, offering cognitive stimulation, health monitoring, social support and more personalized support for both patients and their caregivers. In addition, and as a result of the Foundation's expertise in this area, it will provide the consortium with data of great scientific value, based on genomics, proteomics and digital biomarkers, for the design of a digital platform based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This set of actions will allow us in the future to obtain an early diagnosis of dementia cases, something that will not only improve the quality of life of many people, but will also allow us to accurately plan and implement the most appropriate interventions for them.

The importance of new technologies

Artificial Intelligence tools are becoming an integral part of modern healthcare. Through its machine learning models, capable of assessing and contrasting a greater number of data and references, patterns can be detected and multiple conclusions can be reached in a short working time. This fact makes this technology an essential tool in the progress of medicine and systems for research, diagnosis and treatment of multiple pathologies.

COMFORTage aims to create a virtual health platform based on artificial intelligence that will centralize the resources needed for risk factor analysis, early diagnosis and personalized medical decision-making. The goal is to develop holistic and integrated health models that are tailored to the individual needs of people with age-related disorders.

More specifically, in order to achieve a healthy and active aging, COMFORTage aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Establish a people-centered model, taking into account their needs and preferences. By offering personalized care, we seek to improve the physical and mental health of patients, as well as to promote their social interactions and well-being.
  • Deliver a holistic digital care model that supports and enhances clinical decision making and patient health management.
  • Facilitate the exchange of knowledge and data among health professionals to strengthen primary and community care services, with the aim of improving prevention, early detection and delaying the progression of dementia and frailty.
  • Contribute to the development of more effective and specific health policies for the population, through the collaboration of all parties involved in health care.
  • Improve the relationship between seniors and digital health technologies, establishing a learning system that adapts to their needs and provides them with tools to improve their health education and digital empowerment.
