Dr. Yahveth Cantero-Fortiz, MD, MSc, MHA is Medical Scientific Advisor and Director of the Therapeutic Apheresis Unit at Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona. His profile combines clinical experience, research, scientific leadership and healthcare management, with a career focused on the development of new therapeutic strategies and the improvement of care for people living with Alzheimer’s disease.
He earned his medical degree from the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (Mexico), where he began his research career and accumulated nearly ten years of experience in clinical research in the field of hematology. He subsequently obtained a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and further strengthened his training in research methodology at Cochrane Iberoamérica. He also completed a postgraduate program in Neurodegenerative Diseases and Dementias at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and earned a Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration, specializing in Hospital Management and Administration, at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla.
At Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona, he leads the Therapeutic Apheresis Unit, where he coordinates the clinical and scientific activities related to therapeutic plasma exchange and other therapeutic strategies applied to Alzheimer’s disease. As Medical Scientific Advisor, he advises the General Management and contributes to the development of strategic projects, clinical trials and scientific collaborations, promoting the translation of knowledge into clinical practice.
Dr. Cantero-Fortiz has a solid background in clinical and academic research, research methodology and the development of clinical practice guidelines. He is the author of more than 60 scientific publications and three book chapters, and has participated in research projects and collaborations with national and international institutions. He has also contributed to the development of clinical practice guidelines for international scientific organizations, including the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), and has served as an external clinical research advisor for several institutions in Spain and Mexico.
His career is also closely linked to university teaching. In 2020, he received the AMFEM-Pfizer Award in recognition of his outstanding academic performance during his medical studies. Between 2019 and 2020, he served as an Assistant Professor of Hematology at two Mexican universities and supervised medical theses.
He is currently an Associate Professor at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC), within the Department of Health Sciences, where he teaches the course From Normal Cognitive Function to Dementia in the Medicine degree program and Neurophysiopathology in the Physiotherapy degree program. In addition, he continues to provide clinical care through telemedicine in Mexico, further strengthening his clinical expertise and maintaining close ties with his country of origin.
His professional work is characterized by a multidisciplinary vision of medicine, bringing together research, clinical care, teaching and management to promote therapeutic innovation and generate knowledge with practical applications for the care of neurodegenerative diseases.
