Dr. Maria de Pilar Cañabate is responsible for the Social Work Unit of Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona.

Graduated as a doctor in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Barcelona, she also has a Master in Bioethics and Law from the same university.

Since 1998, she has been part of the diagnostic team of the Ace Diagnostic Unit, where she accompanies families during the course of the disease, providing them with support and strategies to face the situation effectively. Additionally, she designs and implements care and training programs for family members and caregivers.

In addition, Dr. Cañabate is part of the teaching body of the Department of Anthropology of the University of Barcelona and is patron of the Enlace Foundation, an organization dedicated to the care of elderly LGTBI people.

On a regular basis, she collaborates with local and regional administrations, contributing her expertise and advising on the development of social and health policies, in the elaboration of several plans on dementias and clinical practice guides in this area. She has also been co-author of public directives related to decision-making capacity during the progression of dementia, and regularly offers training on dementia to professionals within the field of social sciences.

Her field of scientific interest is oriented to the exploration of the factors that impact the well-being of the caregiver and the person with dementia; the configuration of care, the interrelation between dementia and gender, as well as ethical and legal issues.
