
Emilio Alarcón is bioinformatician. Graduate in Biochemistry from the University of Malaga and Master in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics from the Open University of Catalonia. He is currently a PhD student in the Biomedicine program at the University of Malaga, with a thesis focused on the study of the gene family SIRP and its role in Alzheimer’s disease through proteomics and single-cell RNA-seq approaches.
He began his professional career in 2018 as a freelance bioinformatician, collaborating since then with the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona, an international reference center in clinical and biomedical research in dementias. In 2020, he joined the institution, where he has developed research projects focused on biomarkers and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, including the analysis of large clinical cohorts, integration of multi-omic data and predictive models. He has participated in projects in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry oriented to the characterization of Alzheimer’s progression and its implications in health costs and dependence, as well as in genomic and proteomic studies applied to translational neuroscience.
He is co-author of more than 30 scientific articles published in international journals, including the article “SIRPβ-1 insertion associates with lung cancer progression”, of which he is co-first author. His experience lies at the intersection between bioinformatics, molecular biology and translational medicine, with a particular interest in the development of analysis tools for understanding neurodegenerative processes.
For several years he was an internal student of the Department of Biochemistry, Immunology and Surgical Specialties of the University of Malaga, an experience that allowed him to integrate into university research from early stages of his training. Since 2025 he has been an external collaborator of the same department, participating in academic support activities and laboratory practices, which reflects his interest in university teaching and knowledge transfer.
His lines of research cover genetics, proteomics, the integration of complex clinical data and the application of machine learning methodologies in the biomedical field. In this context, it has contributed to the development of projects with a marked international dimension, within the framework of the collaborations and consortiums in which Ace Alzheimer Center participates, reinforcing the global projection of its work.
