Dra. Amanda Cano
Head of the Molecular Biology and Biomarkers program at the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona Research Unit

Dr. Amanda Cano is responsible for the Molecular Biology and Biomarkers program at the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona Research Unit. Currently, she leads several research projects focused on the identification and evaluation of new biomarkers and molecular pathways involved in the development of Alzheimer’s neuropathologies, through the development of proteomic, liposomic and metabolomic analysis in samples of different fluids of the different stages of the disease.

She is also in charge of plasma biomarker studies at the Diagnostic Unit, which aims to implement this tool in the future as a method of early detection and screening of patients at high risk of developing dementia.

Previously, she was an associate professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Barcelona. She graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Salamanca and obtained a master’s degree in Research, Development and Control of Medicines at the University of Barcelona. She completed her doctoral studies at the same university in the area of nanomedicine and neuropharmacology. During this period, she also combined experimental activity with teaching experience.

She has carried out several international research stays, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States; University College London in the United Kingdom; or the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. She has won several awards, including the Jorge Heller International Award for the best nanomedicine article in 2019.

She is a member of the Center for Biomedical Network Research on Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIBERNED), the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (IN2UB), the Spanish Research and Innovation Group in Extracellular Vesicles (GEIVEX), as well as the International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART), the Alzheimer’s Association.

She has obtained several competitive scholarships to develop his scientific career and has the official credentials of Assistant Professor of the National Agency of Evaluation and Accreditation (ANECA) of the Ministry of Science (Spanish Government) and the Agency for the Quality of the University System of Catalonia (AQU) (Generalitat de Catalunya).

She has also published more than 100 research articles, is a principal investigator of 3 projects and directs several doctoral theses. She has participated in several competitive European projects, competitive national projects, and non-competitive national and international projects.
