Dr. Agustín Ruiz
Director of Research at Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona

Agustín Ruiz Laza holds both a medical degree and a PhD. He is the current Director of Research at Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona. Born in Utrera (Seville), he graduated in Medicine and Surgery and obtained a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Seville. He initially carried out research in the Department of Medical Genetics and Prenatal Diagnosis at Virgen del Rocío University Hospital in Seville (1993–2001).

Dr. Ruiz received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award from the University of Seville (2000) for his thesis. Later, he co-founded several biotechnology companies that received awards for the best business idea and best business plan in the field of biotechnology from the International San Telmo Institute (Spain). For this entrepreneurial activity, he received the Andalusian Government’s 2008 Award for Excellence in Innovation.

He has devoted the last twenty-nine years to medical research and is the inventor of patents related to molecular tests, neurodegenerative biomarkers, and bioinformatic devices. His expertise includes clinical research, molecular genetics, high-performance computing, bioinformatics, and software development.

Dr. Agustín Ruiz has published 230 indexed articles and 153 preprints or abstracts. He has obtained funding for 38 competitive projects granted by regional, national, European, and international agencies. He serves as a reviewer for the European Commission and sits on scientific review panels for research projects in various European and American countries. His scientific interests focus on the application of genomic technologies in medicine. He has contributed to the identification of numerous genetic factors linked to different rare and common diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease.
